“There wasn’t enough Hornsby in my scene,” Justin Vernon, otherwise known as Bon Iver, stated on the Jimmy Fallon Show. From the moment I heard this song, I knew it was an homage to the decade of the 80s. The song really does sound like a lost Bruce Hornsby song, a lost Adult Contemporary hit amongst some Time Life series titled, “Time Life Presents: Easy 80s.” Vernon decided to do what many would critics would think is ridiculous in the current indie scene . . . write a pure pop song minus any quirk, minus any shtick. I do recommend getting the entire record Bon Iver, because this song is simply the cherry on top.
