I’m glad to see consistency with Dan Deacon, as I’m sure he could show up with a bullhorn and broken Simon and still get thousands of people to hug and dance with each other. His persuasion evades me, but it’s definitely something to watch. “True Thrush” from his new album, America, is no different from the Deacon you remember. The same person I saw last year at Moogfest as he turned a crowd of hundreds into a whirlpool with just enough equipment to make a backpack feel heavy. A motivational speaker for the modern age, “True Thrush” has an arrangement of bells, whirrs, distant vocals, thumps, and buzzy bass synths to make you want to sit in a public place and pretend everything you see is happening in some sort of time lapse.
