“Walk on By” is the first single from the forthcoming El Perro Del Mar album, Pale Fire. The song exudes a nineties sultriness reminiscent of Everything But the Girl’s Tracey Thorn in the smooth vocals and downtempo groove, and the artist herself admits that she saw the song as an hommage to songs she loved from the early nineties. Taking that sound, which she captures marvelously without seeming too cliche, and running with the idea of early nineties trip hop groove, the video takes things to its logical conclusion. Everything about this video, from the oversaturated, bright fluorescent colors, to the styling of the artist herself, with her Gwen Stefani-esque hair and makeup, paired with a billowing shirt and pant outfit that feels like something straight from Bridget Fonda’s character in Singles, screams MTV 120 Minutes.
Pale Fire is due out November 13 in the United States via The Control Group.
