Heavy Hawaii was voted Best New Artist in the 2010 San Diego Music Awards. That said, they’ve still been well above the radar. “Teen Angel” is a good place to start in getting to know their lo-fi surf rock-inspired music. It’s got the sensibilities of their neighbors TV Girl, with the pleasantly snotty vocal stylings similar to the last Girls release. It’s surf music for global warming. Twangy guitars, cheap keyboards, and tinny microphones paint a picture of a post-next-disaster West Coast still brave enough to sound apathetic and nostalgic for something they never really experienced.
