jj – New Work

jj is a Swedish duo that released their debut single in 2009 and quickly became Pitchfork darlings. The band has two studio albums to their credit, jj n° 2 and jj n° 3, but today were are focusing on their 2010 mixtape, Kills, which was downloaded in a frenzy this past December and quickly thereafter made unavailable.  “New Work” goes far beyond your typical mash-up and is a seamless offering with precision sampling of Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” and vocals sung by jj but with lyrics from Swedish band Broder Daniel’s “Work” and “When We Were Winning.”

Yes we may be late to it, but who wants to be the first one at the party anyway? It’s such a fantastic song leading into the weekend, having the effect of making anything feel possible . . . or fancy-free in the least, which is a tad ironic considering the track is lamenting the daily work grind.

Best Time and Place to Listen: After a really shitty day at work. Get in your car, crank it and contemplate the hedonistic possibilities that lay ahead.

If This Song Was a Celebrity It Would Be: Jack Lemon’s character, Shelley Levene, from Glengarry Glen Ross.
