I have to say, either I’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, or I simply can not recall a single noteworthy musical act that’s come out of Russia. Can you?
Rock or no, there are some crazily awesome synth pop things that are happening over in Europe, notably with Russia’s Tesla Boy.
Officially endorsed by the ever-growing French New Wave collective known as Valerie (College, Anoraak, etc), Tesla Boy has been winning over audiences abroad with their eerily authentic 80s throwback sounds since 2008. The Moscow trio have been doing especially well in their native Russia, selling out concerts and headlining festivals in the Motherland left and right.
For those of us who just barely missed out on the New Wave scene in the 80s but still desire a steady pop diet, Tesla Boy is your complete prescription, packaged out in one authentic throwback analog synth pill. Forget “chillwave.” This is straight 80s disco! With their rock-solid retro production techniques and some stellar graphic design (check out the cover art for their debut EP), Tesla Boy is bound to take the West by storm sooner or later. Get ready, comrades. It’s coming!
Best Place and Time to Listen: I’m pretty sure this is what Marty and the Doc were listening to while traveling through time in their Delorean. So if you can recreate that.. then.. pat yourself on the back, and please, for the love of god, get in touch with NASA.
If This Song Was a Celebrity It Would Be: Kevin Bacon in Footloose.
