It happens when you least expect it. You’re minding your own business, strolling through the bread aisle or watching a TV show or driving down the highway. And then the familiar notes of some horrible song reach your ears. You try to tune it out or grit your teeth and take it or simply switch the channel, but a couple hours later, as you’re making a sandwich or brushing your teeth, it’s back. And it won’t. Go. Away. Below the top five earworms that have threatened my sanity time and time again. Read at your own risk!
“Hollaback Girl” – Gwen Stefani
As a big “Eff you!” to Courtney Love for calling her a cheerleader, Gwen Stefani wrote ‘Hollaback Girl,’ a song so silly it’s painful. It’s also one of the most obnoxiously catchy tunes ever with its stomping beat, sassy chorus and repetitive breakdown of ‘This sh*t is bananas / B-A-N-A-N-A-S!’ You know what’s bananas? A 35 year old woman singing this stuff with a straight face.No matching videos
“Tubthumping” – Chumbawumba
Chumbawumba has spent the better part of three decades trying to alert people to their anti-establishment cause through their music. Sadly, all they’ve done is given frat boys a song to get wasted to with their 1997 single ‘Tubthumping.’ And I’m far from the first person to wish the tune was never penned: it placed at #12 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 20 Most Annoying Songs sits at #35 on AOL Radio’s 100 Worst Songs Ever.
“All Star” – Smash Mouth
Thanks to the movie Shrek, my kids spent weeks singing this song. It was a painful period in my life. It is because of that experience and the fact that ‘All Star’ has been featured in countless commercials, films and TV shows that I know each and every word by heart. Don’t worry, I’m seeking professional help.
“Wannabe” – Spice Girls
The Spice Girls have long moved on to motherhood, reality TV and wearing normal shoes, but their contribution to pop music will not die- no matter how much we wish it would. ‘Wannabe’ was the girl group’s first single and was supposedly written in 30 minutes. The catchy ditty climbed to the top of the UK charts and stubbornly stayed there for seven weeks before the Brits unleashed their Girl Power monster on the unsuspecting world. I’ll tell you what I want. What I really, really want… Is this song out of my head!
“Baby” – Justin Bieber
The Gods of Rock have given me children who could not care less about Justin Beiber and I daily thank Them for the blessing. But my daughter’s friends have been afflicted with Bieber Fever and, as you know, there is no known cure. When there’s a birthday party or the girls have a sleepover, somehow the music of that mop-topped pop star rears its ugly head. That’s how I first heard ‘Baby,’ much to my detriment. Other than the repetitive chorus, I couldn’t tell you the lyrics to the song, but those few words are all that’s needed to drive a person to madness.
